Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of food inflation on the consumption decisions of households in the Sauces 6 sector of Guayaquil during the 2024–2025 period. The research employed a mixed-methods approach with a descriptive scope, a non-experimental design, and a cross-sectional timeframe. The study population consisted of the sector's residents, and the sample comprised 100 households selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Data collection involved a structured questionnaire with closed-ended questions regarding food price trends, monthly expenditure, quantities purchased, and other factors. Official statistics from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) served as a secondary data source. The collected data were organized and analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, and an analysis of the association between variables. The results reveal changes in household consumption decisions. The analysis of the association between the perception of rising prices and the reduction in the quantity of food purchased yielded statistically significant results (χ²=8.324; p=0.040), indicating a low-to-moderate strength of association (Cramér's V=0.289). It is concluded that the rise in food prices is linked to changes in the consumption decisions of the surveyed households in Sauces 6.
